Iain Burwood

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

Sittingbourne Hockey Club would like to announce their next performance coach signing - Sammzi Bahrawy for the coming 2024/25 season. The signing of Sammzi is an exciting prospect for the Women’s Performance Squad and the club.

Sammzi will head up the all new coaching team as Head of Women’s Performance Squad and will be an integral part of the club's ambitious plans to elevate women's hockey at the club.

Sammzi a former club player and knows Sittingbourne Hockey Club well, having played there for many of his formative years. Since leaving, Sammzi has been on a coaching journey through university achieving a BSc in Sports Coaching Science and a Masters in Psychology. He has also achieved a lot of success within the Kent County setup.

Head of Performance at SHC Iain Burwood said, "The appointment of Sammzi is very exciting for us. He is a driven, hardworking, passionate young coach who doesn't settle for second best and never gives up. He has gained a wealth of coaching experience within a relatively short time and has impressed us with his conduct and organisation."

Sammzi has wasted no time in getting on with the task ahead - building a strong coaching team around him comprising Mark Forshaw (Technical Coach) and Michael Neame (Tactical Coach). In addition to this, the team now have full video analysis capabilities. Something SHC pride themselves in being one of the very few hockey clubs to have such a high standard of setup.

Newly appointed Women's 1st XI captain - Rachel Thompson - said, "This is going to be a big season for all of us and the club, we had a tough time last season narrowly missing relegation. We have already seen the impact of Sammzi, who has set out his expectations and is helping to build momentum going into pre-season."

Sittingbourne Hockey Club has seen rapid growth within their Women's Section over the past couple of seasons, going from one team during covid to three teams and a budding cohort of players in the youth setup. The addition of Faversham Ladies Hockey Club has only but strengthened the section.

When asked about his appointment Sammzi said, "It's an absolute privilege to be appointed Head Coach at SHC. I cannot wait to get things going and see what this talented squad can achieve. It's going to be hard work but that's all part of the fun. I am hoping we can achieve great things and achieve success from top to bottom. We have already made a number of changes, which have seen a positive impact...long may this continue.
